Climate-proof sustainable garden centre of 7,250 m²

This year we are building a climate-proof and sustainable garden centre of 7,250 m² in Reykjavik. This makes a long-cherished dream come true for the family that has been running the old Garðheimar garden centre for two generations.

Mezzanine floor in a 12 meter high building

The 90-metre-wide building with an asymmetrical roof will have a central hall of 25 meters wide. In this central hall with a height of 12 meters a mezzanine floor will be realized. This floor will accommodate offices, canteen and social areas for their staff. The garden centre will have a fully catered restaurant and many attractive shop-in-shops. The warehouse will be fitted with a green roof. There will also be a sales point for heavy garden equipment manufacturer Stihl in the warehouse.

Architecturally natural look

The asymmetrical roof gives the front view of the new garden centre allure. The large windows at the front ensure the connection between the outside and the inside and provide the opportunity to display many products. Furthermore, the natural sun protection of the vertical wooden blinds and the green roof give the biophilic look that suits the company. The design is by the international and award-winning architect PK Arkitektar.

Covered corridor for comfortable shopping

A covered corridor around the outside area ensures that customers can shop comfortably even in bad weather. This is similar to what we have done for Hortes Tallinn and Hobbyland.

Climate-proof energy-efficient construction

For the turbulent climate of Iceland, the roof construction is built with specially developed gutters that connect to 200 mm thick sandwich panels, so that there is more bearing capacity and less condensation.

These extra wide insulated rain gutters have an extra large capacity to prevent nuisance during heavy rainfall or snow. All this results in more comfort and safety and energy savings of more than 40%.

State of the art garden centre

First, the rugged terrain of 20,000 m² is prepared for construction. Large boulders of rocks are broken away to make the remaining soil ready for construction. After the construction of the 1,100 m² warehouse, we will start with the steel construction. The 'state of the art' garden centre will be built climate-proof so that it can withstand the cold and wet climate of Iceland.
